Matanoi Church

The Matanoi Church is situated about 16 km north of Keningau in the Interior of Sabah. The inhabitants consist of mainly Dusuns and Muruts aborigine. They are most farmers and prior to their conversion, belonged to the Roman Catholic Church.

In the year 1960, a Catholic youth by the name of Julius Sodomon (later, Deacon Peter) emigrated to Tamparuli to look for a living. He was converted to the True Jesus Church through his marriage to Sister Maliah Ugar of the Bawang Church.

The couple went back to Kampong Matanoi for good in 1967. Having been moved by the Lord, the couple testified zealously to their relatives and friends. Thirty of them were later baptized into the Lord and set up a prayer-house at the residence of Dn. Peter.

A simple small church was built in 1975 and Dn. Luke Wong of the Keningau Church came occasionally to assist in the Sabbath services. Because of the number of membership was increasing and closed to 70, there was a need for a bigger room. Therefore, a wooden church, costing RM$5,000, was constructed by the members themselves in 1981.

In the year 1990, it was decided in the General Church meeting that a more presentable church be constructed. Hence, the church members began to raise fund and a sum of RM$40,000 was collected.

With the collaboration of all the local members and financial assistance from the Keningau and other churches, a new church building costing more than RM$60,000 was completed and dedicated to the Lord on September 25, 1993.
